LUNA IMAGING AND SUN MICROSYSTEMS ENABLE ONLINE ACCESS TO TWO IMPORTANT STANFORD UNIVERSITY COLLECTIONS

Luna Imaging, Inc., and Stanford University announced today the first installation of Luna's Insight® server using Sun Microsystems Inc.'s Solaris®® operating system to enable online access to two of Stanford's important visual collections.

Stanford chose Insight® to provide the complete visual environment for working online with its collection of more than 1,300 works of leading Chicana artists, as well as a collection of nearly 8,000 images in the Athanasius Kircher Correspondence Collection, held in the archives of the Pontifical Gregorian University and digitally hosted by the Stanford University Libraries. Both collections, along with the Luna Insight® Java client, are accessible via Stanford's Humanities Digital Information Service website at http://www-sul.stanford.edu/depts/hasrg/hdis/insight.html.

Luna's Insight® software was developed in Sun's Java technology with input from users - the researchers, professors, students and collections managers, who work with visual collections. The result is a scalable, multi-platform software tool that enables users to dynamically view and work with high-resolution images, data, video and audio materials online.

"We wrote the application in Java to ensure Insight® would operate on multiple platforms," says Luna Imaging President Michael Ester. "Ensuring smooth operation of Insight® on Sun systems means our software can be easily integrated into any Unix operating environment, which is the standard for many universities."

Luna's Insight®® software combines retrieval and display of text information with a rich set of tools for viewing, comparing and organizing a variety of media across multiple collections from any location. Instructors can draw on collections within Insight® to prepare lectures in the office and display presentations in the classroom with digital projectors or monitors. Presentations can be as simple as choosing and arranging full screen images, embedding video and audio clips in images or drawing on several images at once to show details and side-by-side comparisons.

Stanford's Insight® installation is being delivered to the world from a dedicated Sun 220 Enterprise server that is housed on campus and maintained in a server pool with 24X7 support.
