LUNA’s Advanced Search function allows users to construct advanced search queries. These advanced search queries can be made across one, or several collections. There are three search types to choose from:
- all these words: searches for all of the words in any order. Using Boolean logic, this search is similar to using "AND". If you entered "World Heritage Sites" in this search box, the search results would contain only those items containing all three terms. The Boolean operator "AND" is used automatically with this option, so you don't need to enter it.
- any of these words: searches for any of the words entered in the search box. Using Boolean logic, this search is similar to using "OR". If you entered "World Heritage Sites" in this search box, the search results would contain all items containing any of the three terms, including results with only "World", only "Heritage", and only "Site". The Boolean operator "OR" is used automatically with this option, so you don't need to enter it.
- this exact wording: searches for all of the words in the exact order. This is similar to using quotation marks in other search engines. For instance, if you were searching for "World Heritage Sites", search results would contain only those items that contain the exact phrase "World Heritage Sites".
Searching One Collection
When only one collection is being searched, the available fields to search by are specific to that collection. You can also select to search "In Text Documents"- this will search across the indexed BookReader text and PDFs in that collection.
Cross Collection Searching
When more than one collection is being searched, the available fields to search by are Who, What, When, Where, and In Text Documents.
Use the Collection list to select which collections you would like to search across.
When using the "this exact wording" option, enter a letter or phrase to see a list of known values for that data field. As you add letters the results will continue to narrow. For example, entering "P" will give you cities like "Pittsburgh", and "Paris", and "Pike". But if you add two more letters to form "Par", the list will immediately refine itself and you'll have only values beginning with "Par".
Use the "+" symbol to add additional search values.
LUNA’s Advanced Search function allows users to construct advanced search queries. These advanced search queries can be made across one, or several collections. After selecting a data field to search by and a value for that field, enter the first few letters of what you're searching for and LUNA will provide you with a list of data to select from. For users unfamiliar with the content of a collection this speed search list quickly provides a snapshot of the content and makes searching easier.
Below the Search LUNA box in the top right hand corner is a link to LUNA’s Advanced Search. This link will open the Advanced Search in a separate pop-up window.
In the top left hand corner of the Advanced Search window, use the arrow to display the full list of collections you are searching across and select/deselect specific collections by using the check boxes.
After selecting which collections to search across select a data field from the pull down menu. If you are searching just one collection you can select any data field from that collection. If you are searching across multiple collections you will only have the Who, What, When, Where, and All Fields to choose from.
Choose either “Equals”, “Starts With”, or “Similar To”.
In the search box to the right, enter a letter or phrase to see a list of known values for that data field. As you add letters the results will continue to narrow. For example, entering "P" will give you cities like "Pittsburgh", and "Paris", and "Pike". But if you add two more letters to form "Par", the list will immediately refine itself and you'll have only values beginning with "Par". % will Show All values for that field.
Select the desired value or values. In the example below we selected several values for City by simply clicking on each of them once from the value list. So we'll be searching "Paris (France)" or "(Parkersburg (W. Va.)" or "Parma (Italy)". If you wish to delete a value click on the “x”. We're now finished with selecting values for the City > Equals.
Click on the "+" symbol below our City search in order to add another data field to search by. We're also going to search Country > Equals "France" or "France; Belgium".
Note: This search string is repeated in the Keyword Search box (and also appears in the Thumbnail View search result page) as "City="Paris (France)" OR "Parkersburg (W. Va.)" OR "Parma (Italy)" AND Country="France" OR "France ; Belgium"". You can refine the search by changing the values in this string or in the Advanced Search box.
When you have finished selecting your search criteria, click the “Search” button in the top right corner of the window.
Note: You may select the option to perform an AND or OR search by clicking the “AND” button to the left of the field selection box.
Your search results will then appear in the Thumbnail View and you can even continue to refine your results further using the Narrow Search box to the left.
