OCR + PDF = Enhanced Delivery via BookReader

Once we’ve completed the initial capture we offer a range of services to prepare your object for delivery. Services to create BookReader objects include, but aren’t limited to, OCR and compound PDF creation.

When material has been OCR'd and compiled into popular, easy to use formats like PDF the once inaccessible material easily becomes searchable and useful. And when added to software like our Insight + LUNA software suite, your digitized material also becomes a dynamic part of the web. How? Read on...

Insight + LUNA v6.3 Release, August 2010

LUNA’s renowned elegant user interface coupled with Insight’s powerful collection building tools is what makes the Insight + LUNA software suite the best software available for building, managing, and sharing digital image collections. Whether for public exposure or for internal use, Insight + LUNA’s robust tools are in use by cultural heritage institutions the world over. And now with our latest release we’re setting the bar even higher by introducing the BookReader.

The BookReader integrates the discovery and display of compound objects such as books, manuscripts, and newspapers in LUNA. The BookReader allows users to search inside a book, turn its pages, and zoom into the text. Of course. BUT because our BookReader is a part of the amazing LUNA browser, its added features make it rise above the competition:

Add entire books and/or pages of books to Media Groups.
Add single pages to slide shows and presentations.
View a BookReader object in the Detail View, as a page of thumbnails, or in the Full View. The Full View provides a larger display of the book object and incorporates a vertical thumbnail panel to quickly scroll through individual book pages.
Export BookReader objects as a PDF.

In addition to the BookReader the v6.3 release includes full text search, OAI-PMH compliance and more.

We’re not satisfied with just giving our fans a run of the mill feature. With the release of LUNA with Insight v6.0 we mastered the art of dynamically delivering high resolution images on the web, and now we’ve done the same for text-based objects. But don't take our word for it, see for yourself.

Adding BookReader Objects to LUNA

Our goals are always to make your life easier. So we’ve developed two ways you can add BookReader objects to LUNA collections: easily compile BookReader objects with your own source material; or add Internet Archive and/or Open Library titles to LUNA collections. Either way we’ve developed easy to use tools so you can continue to be successful in your collection building initiatives.

With over 1 million titles, the Internet Archive Text Archive contains a wide variety of fiction, popular books, children’s books, historical texts and academic books. By viewing Internet Archive content in LUNA your users will benefit from the extensive LUNA feature set including Media Groups, Presentations, Slide Shows, and more.

Full Text Search

Giving users dynamic tools to work with these BookReader objects is important, but it’s equally important to give them the tools necessary to find the objects in the first place!

LUNA now indexes full text from BookReader and PDF media. Users will be able to select whether they search catalog data or both catalog data and the text in documents.
