-- Insight Users Group Meeting to be Held in Conjunction with the VRA Meeting in Baltimore
-- New Insight Hosted Product Promises Success
-- Insight Consortial License Introduced for 2006
-- Visit Luna at Upcoming Conferences

On Monday, March 6, the Insight community will gather at the Hyatt Regency in Baltimore for the annual Insight Users Group meeting. Repeating sessions will be held in order to accommodate the conference going schedules for the many VRA participants. This is an opportunity for Luna’s clients to gather and learn about current and future Insight development.

The VRA community will have a chance to visit with representatives from Luna and see Insight during the exhibition hall hours on March 8 and 9. In addition to the exhibit hall hours, an introduction to Insight will be held on Wednesday, March 8, from 12:45-1:30, in Constellation Ballroom A.

Luna has several clients taking advantage of the new Insight hosted solution that was introduced in 2005. The recent development of Insight Studio increased the Insight suite’s flexibility and the new hosted model supports the full distribution of the Insight collection building tools to our hosted clients.

With earlier hosted models, clients submitted content for Luna to process into Insight collections. With Insight Studio on local desktops, clients are able to process images directly into Insight collections to create the full-suite of derivatives including a JPEG2000 format image. Insight Studio also permits Collection Managers to design and share custom metadata templates for the Insight collections they are building. Once the Insight collection is built, the descriptive data can be entered and/or edited with the Inscribe cataloguing client. All collections are then accessible through the Insight Java client, the Insight Browser, and the Insight XML Gateway.

Insight Consortial License Introduced for 2006

Luna meets the academic community’s need for a distributed toolset that will permit building collections to centralized systems where support resources, such as equipment and staffing, can be leveraged. As illustrated by Luna’s Hosted model, Insight has the component architecture to support community efforts, and now Luna has a consortial licensing model that is attractive for both Host and Member institutions working together to achieve shared project goals.

The new Insight consortial model facilitates distributed collection building and allows Member institutions to participate without the need for a full Insight license. Because the Consortial Host will hold the Insight license, Members can pay a fraction of the cost of Basic Insight Support in order to have access to local Insight collection building tools.

Local collections and content from Member institutions can be added to the Host’s centralized Insight server. Member Insight collection building tools include Insight Studio, Inscribe for cataloguing, and Personal Insight for supporting personal collections built from within the Insight Java client. Members have the option to expand the available Insight software tools and determine whether systems support will be provided by Luna or by the systems resources available through the Consortial Host.
