Dear Insight Community,

On September 4, we released v6.2.1 featuring the addition of Annotations and My Uploads to the LUNA browser. These features allow your users to use and personalize the collections in ways never before possible. We encourage you to explore these new features firsthand at LUNAcommons.org. Please log in or register for an account so that you can experience all the power of these new features!

V6.2.1 Release Highlights
Annotations
The new Annotation tool allows users to add annotations to images and to control whether these annotations are public or private. Annotations can include text (as we had in the Insight Java client) and HTML code so that users can embed widgets or links to things like You Tube videos and Google Maps.

My Uploads
My Uploads allows users to upload images and various other file types (audio, video, PPT, PDF, OIV, etc.) from their desktop directly into LUNA. Users can also add catalog information for each object. My Uploads can be shared, or kept private. With this new feature we've created a platform where institutional and personal content can truly be integrated. Insight administrators control which users have permission to use My Uploads as well as which file types are supported.

For complete release details please see the Insight v6.2.1 + LUNA release notes.

Upgrade your Collections
We’d like to help you take advantage of the benefits of LUNA as soon as possible. To schedule assistance with the upgrade, please email Michelle deFarra - michelle [at] lunaimaging.com.

Authentication and Authorization Options for Managing Individual Access to LUNA
LUNA is a feature rich environment which supports the creation and sharing of content defined by individual users. We therefore strongly recommend unique logins for all users so they can fully personalize and control their content. Since there are different authentication and authorization options with LUNA we’d like to summarize the options here, and encourage your Insight administrators to contact us if they need assistance in setting up the one that works best for your institution.

Many of our clients continue to manage users with the Insight User Manager. While the Insight User Manager authenticates access to LUNA, it may not be the ideal solution if you have users sharing logins. LUNA’s authentication is more flexible by design and supports mixed authentication methods including:

  • Integration with Active Directory LDAP and Open LDAP to grant access to your collections.
  • LUNA’s progressive authorization using both IP ranges and individual logins allows campuses to first authorize access via IP address (range of IPs, blocks of IPs) and then further refine privileges via individual login and self-registration.
  • LUNA’s system of credentials enables administrators to provide or deny access to collections as well as set user privileges including viewable resolution, export restriction, collection level annotations, and support for My Uploads.

Please give us a call if you’d like more information or assistance for selecting the authorization and authentication options that are best suited for your institution.

Feedback
As always, we want to hear from you. Whether you have comments on existing features of Insight + LUNA or a wish list for future features, please share them with us. We never stop thinking about improving our software and we’re most successful when our development program is rooted in our Insight Community. Our next conference is Educause in Denver, November 3 – 5. Please visit us in Booth 567 if you are in attendance.
